This article contains a systematic study of the application by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) of the proportionality judgment in cases assessing the limitations imposed by States on rights and freedoms. The article places particular emphasis on the study of the collective purposes envisaged by the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which would justify a restriction of one of the rights. In particular, the application of the concept of public morality, national security and the clause relating to the protection of the rights and freedoms of others. Regarding the protection of the rights and freedoms of others, the contribution asses its application in SAS c. France (2015), a case about the limitation of the integral Islamic veil in public spaces.
